Venus and Serena Williams Retire Early from Wimbledon Match

The Williams’ sisters are arguably some of the best tennis stars in the world. Serena and Venus Williams have teamed up to win a total of five Wimbledon doubles matches in the career, and Serena was ranked number one in the women’s singles tournament earlier this weekend until a heartbreaking loss during the tournament this weekend. Coming after her unexpected loss is more heartbreak for the tennis star, who had to retire early from her last doubles match with sister Venus because of a virus.

“I am heartbroken I’m not able to continue in the tournament. I thought I could rally this morning, because I really wanted to compete, but this bug just got the best of me. We were all looking forward to a great match. From the bottom of my heart, I thank all of the fans for their cheering and understanding. I look forward to returning to Wimbledon next year,” the tennis star explained to the media following her retirement from the match.

Reporters from the Washington Post reported that Williams received medical treatment prior to the match. She was allegedly crying as she received treatment, and the match started approximately 13 minutes late due to her need for treatment. Williams and her sister were into their third game of the match when she began to play unlike herself. Fans noticed she began to play inconsistently, serving four double faults. Once she and her sister decided to retire early from the match, the game’s refs issued a statement that was turned into a tweet from the official Wimbledon informing the public that Serena Williams suffered from a virus and could no longer compete.

A win would have meant that the Williams’ sisters would take home their sixth Wimbledon win, but it will have to wait until next year when the tennis star is back on her feet and able to play with expertise and good health.
