Franchot Tone was an American actor, producer, and director of stage, film, and television who was known for his appearance in The Twilight Zone and The Alfred Hitchcock Hour. On the other hand, Tone was nominated for an Academy Award for “Best Actor” for his portrayal of Midshipman Roger Byam in Mutiny on the Bounty (1935) starring alongside the likes of Clark Gable and Charles Laughton.

  • He was one of the founding members called The Group Theatre based in New York City.
  • While at Cornell University, he was elected as the president of the drama club and acted in productions of Shakespeare. He was also elected to the Sphinx Head Society and was a member of the Alpha Delta Phi fraternity.
  • After completing his graduation, Franchot dropped out of his family business and instead decided to start a career in theater and later relocated to Greenwich Village, New York.
  • Franchot was a chain smoker. This eventually led to him developing lung cancer which ultimately ended his life on September 18, 1968. His ashes were interred in the Point Comfort Cemetery of Quebec, Canada on July 24, 2022.
  • He received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame on February 8, 1960, which is located at 6558 Hollywood Blvd, on the south side of the 6500 block.
